Periods 4/6: Crimes Against Property and Defenses, Class Recap

A back alley in Bellingham, Washington (2009). Would a reasonable person think that there is a higher possibility of crime here than other areas? That could contribute to a possible defense.

Hi everyone,

For the first time, we definitely ended in two different places in each class. Period 4 had the chance to do the alibi simulation, while Period 6 (as is their nature) asked a ton of questions about the book problems, which meant we didn't have the chance to do it. I'll see if we can fit it in next class. Here's the recap:

Soundtrack: “Bugatti (Clean Radio Version)” by Ace Hood. Yeah, there is no chance I am going to link to the explicit lyrics (especially because I played the clean version in class). I selected the song because I was asked to in the comments under the last post, and if you are all of a sudden waking up in a brand new Bugatti, you are probably going to be a suspect in a case of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.

AGENDA 10/23/13:
Case Brief
Chapters 10 and 11
Defenses Worksheet
Alibis

Homework: Review for unit final (check your calendars). Prepare for notebook check (Period 6). Turn in missing work. Check the blog! Case briefs assigned to Emil/Faduma (Period 4) and Kethry/Ben (Period 6).
--
Case Brief: For Period 4, Jennifer brought in this article (in the United Kingdom): Newser.com - Groom Forgets to Book Venue, Freaks, Calls in Bomb Threat. I was actually just in Liverpool in June!

In Period 6, Caston gave me his article from earlier (so now he gets credit): CNN.com - Father charged after 2-year-old fatally shoots herself.

Hevani chose this article: OregonLive.com - 'Josh shot Mommy,' girl tells police in alleged domestic violence killing of Gresham woman.

Tanner needs to remember to bring an article next class!

Chapters 10 and 11: Much of the rest of class (the entire class in Period 6) was devoted to doing the definitions and answers to questions in Chapters 10 and 11, which were about crimes involving property and possible defenses. I always love going through the answers and hearing all the questions that come up!

Defenses Worksheet: I skipped this in both classes (Period 4 to do the alibi activity and Period 6 to continue answering the chapter questions). I will possibly bring it back on Friday, to help everyone get more solid on the concepts before the unit test.

Alibis: I thought Period 4 did an AMAZING job with this. Especially our suspects for coming up with a great story. This was fantastic. I won't spoil it for Period 6, because we will hope to do it next class. For Period 6, remember that this is what is due for the notebook check at the end of class on Friday:

Notebook Check #2:
High School as a Prison Answers
Chapter 8 Definitions and Answers (Intro to Criminal Law, 8.1-8.3)
Chapter 9 Definitions and Answers (Crimes Against the Person, 9.1-9.2)
Chapter 10 Definitions and Answers (Crimes Against Property, 10.1-10.5)
Chapter 11 Definitions and Answers (Defenses, 11.1-11.4)

See you on Friday!
